Presenter: Today in our studio we are discussing one of the controversial issues of our modern world — the role of family values in people’s lives. The modern world suggests a lot of challenges and the role of the family is crucial in establishing good relations with other people. Is it really so? Professor Andrews, a family psychologist, is here to tell us more. Good morning, Alicia. Welcome to the program.

Professor Andrews: Good morning. Glad to be here.

Presenter: The term ‘family values’ is defined by people as something important and undoubtedly vital but no one can say what exactly it implies. What does it mean?

Professor Andrews: Family values refers to the set of principles that a family functions under and relies on. The values are imparted by the family-based upon how they act with each member and others outside of the family. It is something that can’t be touched physically but can be understood through observing the actions of all family members.

Presenter: Can you give us some textbook examples of family values?

Professor Andrews: Well, we can observe these situations in our everyday life. Imagine that you have a family tradition of going to the church on Sunday mornings but your child wants to invite his friends to play. Needless to say, parents will tell their child not to do that as this family outing is far more important and can’t be missed by anyone in the family. The child understands that he cannot make other plans on Sunday mornings.

Presenter: So, children learn how to behave by following the model of the behaviour of their parents?

Professor Andrews: Yes, that’s right. So their parents did when they were brought up by their parents. If a parent treats everyone equally and respectfully in the family, he shows a good example for his kids who start to copy his behaviour. This way of following the rules teaches everyone responsibility and refers to a friendly atmosphere in the family.

Presenter: Is there a set of universal family principles approved by society?

Professor Andrews: Well, I am not sure about the certain list but I reckon some basic ideas can be quite common. Still, every family decides for themselves what ideas to stick to. What a family determines to be important may differ wildly from family to family.

Presenter: Can you throw light on some potential family values to uphold for a family?

Professor Andrews: As a psychologist, I would say, respecting the elderly is one of the basics. Building strong ties within a family, grandparents create a stable supportive family network that has a deep impact on future adult life. Furthermore, they deeply affect the psychological health of their grandchildren and it is not only nannying and treats. They stand as something strong that unites the whole family together. I suppose everyone cherishes his memories of grandma’s smile passing a plate of hot pancakes on Sunday morning in her country house, doesn’t he?

Presenter: That’s my point too. How we behave at home shows our attitude and respect to all members of our society and not only family. And it is a question of good upbringing.

Professor Andrews: That’s true. Showing compassion in treating your grandparents is another principle valued by society. It allows the person to learn how to show empathy and become a good friend and a human being.

Presenter: What about responsibility? Is it important too?

Professor Andrews: Instilling a sense of responsibility is another crucial issue. You can start with small levels of responsibility depending upon the age of the child. Doing certain chores each day like taking a dog for a walk or sweeping the floors helps children see how they specifically contribute to the family. Committing to do housework teaches responsibility and affects all family members. Isn’t that a thing that makes a family harmonious?

Presenter: I agree with you completely. Hope every family could have such family values. Thank you very much, Alicia. It was so great to talk to you today.

Professor Andrews: My pleasure.
