Strategies and useful tips
- Read the statements very carefully and point out the keywords to help you focus on what to listen for.
- The questions follow the order of the information in the recording.
- Do not confuse FALSE and NOT STATED. Be particularly careful with Not stated answers—information about this is just not in the text.
- Remember that answers should be based on information in the text, not what you personally think or know.
- If any of the statements are connected with feelings/opinions, think about how these might be expressed.
- Be careful with negatives in the statements.
- Listen and begin answering. Don't expect to be able to answer everything during the first listen. Finish answering when listening for the second time.
- Check your answers—have you answered every question?

Joan: Hi Melissa! How are you?
Melissa: Hi, Joan. I'm fine, thank you, and you?
Joan: Me too. How are you doing? Did you go to the lecture you told me about?
Melissa: Yes, I did, it was lovely.
Joan: What was it about?
Melissa: It was a lecture by a famous Russian professor. He told us about the economic systems and their benefits.
Joan: Was it worth it? How many people listened to it?
Melissa: Surely, it was. I guess there were about 30 listeners.
Joan: Well, what about economic systems anyway?
Melissa: There are four types of economic systems: traditional, planned, market and mixed economy. They exist in different countries, for instance, here in the UK we have a market economy. In Afghanistan, they have a traditional economy. They are governed by customs and traditions and they use manual labour. The planned economy was in the USSR, remember when the history teacher taught us about Soviet plans for five years?
Joan: Yes, we all agreed that it was inefficient.
Melissa: Yes, it was, however, there are still some countries that have this system such as Cuba, China or Northern Korea.
Joan: And what about the market economy?
Melissa: It exists in Canada, the USA and 27 European countries.
Joan: What's so good about the market economy? From what I see, capitalism is a violent and toxic system and not all of us can handle the pressure of it.
Melissa: You are partly right. Capitalism is violent and toxic, but there is simply nothing better than the market economy. At least we haven't come up with anything more suitable.
Joan: I hope that someday we will have something more humane and fair as the economic system.
Melissa: I'm with you on this one.
Joan: Then let's go get some coffee!
