Strategies and useful tips
- It's not necessary to hear and understand every word that's spoken. You need to understand the general meaning of a text.
- All six speakers have a common topic. You need to find the peculiarities of each statement, each extract.
- Read the seven statements. Point out the details that you have to listen for (keywords).
- As you listen for the first time, note for each speaker anything which will help to fix them in your mind (age, gender) and any words/phrases that correspond to what you're listening for.
- Remember that the extracts may contain distracting information, so you should listen to the whole piece before you make a decision. Don't decide too quickly. The word "but" may be the most important word in the recording!
- People started to study solar energy in the XIX century.
- The condition of our planet depends on us.
- An Australian actress provided a whole theatre with solar energy.
- This person doesn't mind having solar panels.
- Having solar panels doesn't mean you stop using electricity.
- It's useless to save energy for one person if a building wastes it.
- Leaving the lights on may be a necessity.

Yes, I've heard of solar panels. But I'm not that rich to buy one. And I'm also sceptical about them. Well, if you live in a hot country, you may install such a device onto your roof. But what's next? Does all the electricity supply depend on the panels, or do you still have to use sockets and plugs? If so, then I wouldn't even bother.

Oh, I've been dreaming about buying solar panels to save electricity and help the environment! But I live in Siberia—we don't have much sun here! And our winters are long and mostly dark. I've read that many celebrities, who care about nature, buy themselves the panels or even equip filming studios, theatres or other facilities with them. Well, if I were wealthy, I'd do exactly the same! The planet is getting overwhelmed, and we must cling to any chance to help it.

That's actually an old issue—scientists began to get interested in solar energy in the XIX century. It was 1842 when a French physicist Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel provided an experiment. He managed to convert the solar light into electricity. With these positive results, people even wanted to build the first solar power plant. But the war disrupted all the plans. Anyway, a hundred years later—in 1948—Giacomo Luigi Ciamician created the prototype of a modern solar battery! And this new technology was even tested in space by the American astronauts 10 years later! A lot of work has been done since then—and now, solar panels are becoming more and more popular.

Our teacher is always speaking about energy saving! At home, we are not used to turning off all the lights when nobody's in. I'm not really sure that a family consisting of three people can produce huge ecological problems because of this habit! Two years ago, our school was renovated, and plenty of floodlights were set around the inner rim of the roof. So, for the first six months, the floodlights were on during all the nights. And you know—in winter, it gets dark at 5 p.m. here. We couldn't sleep—that bright the floodlights were! People wrote a lot of complaints, and in six months, the floodlights were off, at last. If our school doesn't want to help the environment, why must I do it then?
Speaker E
My friend lives in one of the hot tropical countries in Asia, and she told me her own opinion about saving energy. Their country is sunny, but people there are mostly poor—so few people can afford a solar panel installation. And as regards energy saving, they can't even turn the lights off at night! The reason is, they have one-storeyed houses, and there are too many rats. If you turn off the lights, they will come out and eat your food or bite someone! She has a two-year-old girl, and she says she doesn't want the rats to do any harm to her daughter. So, it is just easier for them to keep the lights on in their kitchen all night.
Speaker F
I consider myself an ecologically friendly person. I try to sort out all the recyclable materials at home and work. I never use a plastic bag when I do the shopping—I have three reusable shoppers. I always use paper on both sides. And, of course, I never leave the lights on when I go out. People might say it's not enough to keep our planet clean—especially today when few people care about the environment. But I say it's not true. If we unite and start doing all this stuff together, there will be no need in producing plastic or thinking about how to save energy!
