Green View: Hello! It is a "Green View" blog, and my name is Aleksandra. Today we have a special guest—we have a real eco-star, Greenpeace volunteer, member of the Society of Voluntary Forest Firefighters and just an ecologically friendly person—Dima Khitrova! Hello, Dima! Could you please tell us about yourself and your organisation? Where are you from, and why is the theme of ecology not indifferent to you?
Dima: I live in Yekaterinburg—I was born here, and I grew up here. For many years I had been a Greenpeace volunteer. At the moment, I'm still extinguishing fires with the Society of Voluntary Forest Firefighters. I have always been interested in ecology, especially in the last ten years. I left my job—I am an architect by profession, and I worked there for seven years. And I started different ecological activities. I began to extinguish fires, plant forests, take part in eco-events, write informative eco-posts and sew eco-goods. Eco-goods like shoppers, reusable shoe covers and masks. I also started recycling and teaching eco-lessons at schools and kindergartens.
Green View: Wow, so many activities! Admirable!
Dima: In the last two years, I have been plugging a lot. It's jogging and picking up rubbish in our parkland. And I also make watercolour paper out of cash receipts. Well, I also organise charitable exhibitions. Last year, I gave all the earned money to Nurov's Garden.
Green View: What were your first steps in the struggle for a clean world?
Dima: My first conscious steps were in Moscow in 2010—I often came there to extinguish peat fires as a member of the Greenpeace team. I am a member of various fire-fighting organisations. I worked in the Astrakhan region and at the Volga, as well.
Green View: And what goals have you reached for today?
Dima: Today, I'm at home in Yekaterinburg. I try to introduce the experience and share the knowledge with everyone, teach ecological lessons and write posts on environmental issues. I give interviews to newspapers, TV-channels; there were also broadcasts on the radio devoted to the pollution issue. I try to popularise the "green life" among people.
Green View: Do you think today's fashion for ecology has led to many positive changes?
Dima: Yes, it has. Now, the theme of ecology sounds a lot louder than ten years ago. We may say there is a tendency for people to take part in different ecological events. They want to help themselves and Nature, so they are beginning to make their own steps.
Green View: How can an ordinary family contribute to the ecology of their city or country?
Dima: I always say that ecology starts with you—with every particular person. Day by day, every family may reduce the production of rubbish. If everyone had acted so, we wouldn't have such problems as we are having now. Every person has enormous potential! It just seems to be a drop in the bucket—but the ocean does consist of drops!
Green View: Will you please tell us about your hobby—painting on a watercolour paper of cash receipts?
Dima: Oh, the paper has become my calling card! That's how people have learnt about me not only here in Yekaterinburg, but outside. There were plenty of TV segments. I have been interviewed a lot about this. We even made a full-length film describing the technology of paper production. I started doing this in 2018 and have already created about 50 works. I have already recycled more than one thousand cash receipts to do it!
Green View: My last question is: what new ecological projects would you like to actualise in the next five years?
Dima: I'm looking forward to having the eco-lessons back on the schedules again! I'm ready to cooperate with different schools and kindergartens. Five years is a long time—I don't know what will happen tomorrow. That's why I'm doing what I can.
Green View: Thank you so much, Dima! I wish you new eco-victories, responsive people, and have a strong belief in what you're doing! Faith supported by actions can make miracles happen!
