Astrakhan Nature Reserve

The number of towns and cities is annually increasing. More and more people choose the urban lifestyle. It is more comfortable to live in a city or town: light, hot water and central heating are always available. The vehicle system is better developed. However, there are plenty of disadvantages in A \(\underline{ }\) , as well. Air pollution, deforestation and extinction of many kinds of animals and plants are the result. Even in a city forest, it may be hard to meet an ordinary squirrel or a hare.

The number of places not touched by man is reducing enormously. If wild nature is not protected, it may B \(\underline{ }\) . It means that such a planet will have no future. To avoid such a state of affairs and prevent the catastrophic situation, scientists had the idea of natural reserves and national parks. One of such places is situated in Russia, in the Astrakhan region.

Astrakhan State Nature Reserve is located in the Volga C \(\underline{ }\) . It was founded on April 11, 1919, under Astrakhan State University. The first director of the reserve was Vladimir Khlebnikov. Khlebnikov was an ornithologist—that is, a person who studies birds. He also studied the vegetable and animal life D \(\underline{ }\) .

Astrakhan Nature Reserve covers a large territory. At first, its areas had covered about 23 thousand hectares (ha), but afterwards, it increased almost thrice. Now, the reserve's territory is over 67 thousand ha.

The purpose of the reserve is to protect the Volga forests with their inhabitants and study various kinds of animals and plants. Around 280 types of birds live there, 72 of which are considered rare. The forests E \(\underline{ }\) curly cranes, pelicans, cormorants and herons. Almost all the birds are listed in the Red Book. Also, there are more than 60 various types of fish of different rare families. In Astrakhan Nature Reserve, there are about 17 kinds of mammals. Foxes, wolves and hogs live in the local forests.

Every year plenty of photographers come here to take pictures of nature. The reserve offers a photo tour for them. There are also excursions for tourists and children groups. Another fact is, the nature reserve needs young and active volunteers. The staff is F \(\underline{ }\) new helpers and accept them into the team. Volunteering has been developing here since 2014.
