Are Spanish traditions important in Mexico?Very much so. They are an important part of everyday life in the country. For instance, most Mexicans follow the Roman Catholic religion, which the Spanish brought to Mexico. Nearly every town or village, no matter how small they are, has a Catholic church. Where are the churches usually situated?In central squares. They call such squares plazas [ˈplɑ:zəz]. The plaza is the heart of a town or village life. The church is situated on one side of the square, shops and government buildings are located on other sides of it. This way of arranging buildings around the central plaza came from Spain. Anything else that came from Spain? Many Mexicans follow the Spanish custom of gathering at the plaza in the evening to talk with family and friends.Are there any similarities with other cultures, modern European or American trends? Certainly there are. In our age of world globalization you can't help it. Modern Mexico shares many similarities with the United States and other modern nations.Can you name some of them?Of course, I can. Like the United States, Mexico is an urban country. Most of Mexico's people live in cities. In fact, about 20 million people live in or near Mexico City, the nation's capital. The country has some important industries, lots of trading partners all over the world. I can say that in modern Mexican culture you can find bits of Indian and Spanish cultures as well as customs similar to those of any modern nation. What is the Mexican culture a mixture of?
