International Women's Day was originally supposed to be a special day when we celebrate various achievements made by females. On this day we should highlight such issues as female equality, reproductive rights and abuse against women and girls around the world. A modern interpretation of March 8 as a day of flowers, spring and beauty hides the initial meaning of this celebration.
One may wonder, why should we celebrate this day if women have all the rights they need. Do they? Far from it! Women were allowed to vote barely a hundred years ago. Do you know that women's salaries are 30 % less than mens'? The majority of employees pay less to their female employers because women can take maternity leave or take some days off when their children get sick. No doubt modern women are in a much more favourable position than 100 years ago but it's all because of the constant fight for their rights by millions of women. It's because of them we can have our own real estate, travel and have the opportunity to study and work.
