Presenter: Hello everybody and welcome to our podcast. The topic of different types of getting an education is getting more and more vital. So, today we are discussing the problem of choosing self-education as a core basis. That is the question that bothers a great number of students nowadays. Today in the studio we have a guest! This is a popular blogger John Summers. He has recently done a survey on this issue and we'll be glad to get some statistics. Good morning, John. Welcome to the program.

John: Good morning. Thanks for inviting me. I hope it'll be a fruitful discussion!

Presenter: So, as we are limited in time, let's just start the conversation as your listeners have sent a lot of messages with different questions to you!

John: Sure, no problem! What would you like to know first?

Presenter: As we all know you're really interested in the idea of self-education. And you post a lot of articles on this topic. Can you briefly describe to us how do you understand this notion?

John: Well... Answering your question... Self-education is opposed to the formal one.

Presenter: What does it mean?

John: Formal education precisely gives students some basic skills to do a particular job or assignment. Most systems are designed around a set of values or ideals that govern all educational choices in that system.

Presenter: So, you mean that self-education doesn't allow you to get basic skills?

John: Self-education is the act of acquiring knowledge or skill without having someone else teach it to you. You are the only one who will help yourself get that knowledge without any formal instruction and you will be educated without any actual formal schooling. But it can be challenging sometimes if the person is not self-disciplined.

Presenter: What about the number of subjects you study? Schools provide kids with various ones, so they can choose what they like.

John: A self-educated individual can aim to learn a little bit about everything, or they can work hard toward mastering a single subject. Either way, it is the act of taking your learning into your control. There are no boundaries to self-education.

Presenter: By the way, is it possible to combine formal and self-education.

John: Yes, of course. That's the message I'm trying to deliver to my followers. Formal education can sometimes limit you while another type can help you to improve the spheres you are interested in but are not taught at schools.

Presenter: Unfortunately, we are running out of time. Thank you very much, John. It was so great to talk to you today. I think that after our podcast everybody can find something for reflection.

John: My pleasure.
