Government support
Presenter: Hello, everybody, and welcome to our podcast. Today in our studio we are discussing the opportunities for teenagers to do sport. Some people believe that nowadays youths tend to spend more time staying at home rather than doing something active. Mr Smirnov, a government representative, is here to tell us about the government's measures taken to involve teenagers in doing sport. Good morning, Andrew. Welcome to the program.

Mr Smirnov: Good morning. Glad to be here.

Presenter: Let's start with some general notions. Can we say that teenagers have enough opportunities today to be active?

Mr Smirnov: Well... The city can provide this age group with all necessary options.

Presenter: What do you mean?

Mr Smirnov: First of all, we are talking about free organisations subsidised by the government. That means that a pupil can join such a club for free.

Presenter: Sounds great! But aren't they just places where teenagers will gather and do nothing?

Mr Smirnov: It's definitely not. For instance, recently, the sport orienting section was opened in one of the districts.

Presenter: Sport orienting? I haven't even heard of such activity. Can you say just a couple of words about it?

Mr Smirnov: Sure. It's a sport that involves navigational skills using a map or a compass. You have to move from point to point as fast as possible and not get lost!

Presenter: Wow! Sounds interesting. Are there more traditional solutions?

Mr Smirnov: Sure! There are free football pitches, basketball courts and also every quarter new ground with sporting equipment is built in the city. So, in fact, there are plenty of opportunities for youngsters.

Presenter: Isn't it old-fashioned to do something for free?

Mr Smirnov: Not at all. In fact, almost all Soviet and Russian sportspeople started doing sport when they entered free sections or sports schools. Sofiya Velikaya, Aleksandr Karelin... They joined sports sections, not at an early age, but got outstanding results. And they also take part in the social life of youths.

Presenter: Yes, I think everybody knows or at least heard of these athletes. So, to conclude, nowadays people and especially teenagers have enough opportunities to do sport! Thank you very much, Andrew. It was so great to talk to you today.

Mr Smirnov: My pleasure.
