Strategies and useful tips

  • Read the statements very carefully and point out the keywords to help you focus on what to listen for.
  • The questions follow the order of the information in the recording.
  • Do not confuse FALSE and NOT STATED. Be particularly careful with Not stated answers—information about this is just not in the text.
  • Remember that answers should be based on information in the text, not what you personally think or know.
  • If any of the statements are connected with feelings/opinions, think about how these might be expressed.
  • Be careful with negatives in the statements.
  • Listen and begin answering. Don't expect to be able to answer everything during the first listen. Finish answering when listening for the second time.
  • Check your answers—have you answered every question?

Script: Active Pastime Polly: Hi, Steve!

Steve: Hi, Polly. How is it going?

Polly: Seems fine. But I was really busy preparing for my project.

Steve: Oh yes! Can you remind me what topic have you chosen?

Polly: I've been doing research work on teenagers' pastimes and hobbies.

Steve: How I can forget. You gave out a quiz to the whole class last week.

Polly: My primary task was to find out whether teens prefer active or lazy activities.

Steve: And what was the result?

Polly: To my surprise, 75 % have chosen active ones.

Steve: Oh! There is still hope for us (laughing)!

Polly: Yeah! I was surprised too. It's great that youngsters prefer active hobbies and pastimes.

Steve: What was your second goal?

Polly: The second part was dedicated to getting data about favs and most popular activities. Can you guess what is on the top?

Steve: Let me think... hmm... Don't say it's doing sport!

Polly: How did you guess? Did you see my report? I'm joking. Yes, you are right. 65 % of respondents who have chosen being active mentioned sport as their top priority.

Steve: What do they do?

Polly: Well... in the first place is the gym. As they are widely spread now. Then goes home exercising. The Internet is full of videos on how to keep fit at home. By the way... what was your choice?

Steve: Oh, you know I'm among lazy bones.

Polly: How can it be? I remember you were doing sports when you were younger.

Steve: Right you are. Football to be exact! But I got trauma and had to stop doing it professionally.

Polly: Do you miss doing it?

Steve: Frankly speaking no. As I had never seen myself as a professional footballer. Of course, I wasn't happy with the injury but that is life. Oh, I'm really sorry to interrupt you, but I have to go. Maybe you can tell me the final results tomorrow?

Polly: No problem at all! It's late! Sure! Let's meet tomorrow. Bye!

Steve: See you!
