A lot of people grow rhubarb in their gardens. They eat it raw, make pies and jam and add it into pickles. But not all of us know that this edible plant can be a real menace to health. Experienced gardeners can bet: you may eat only the stems. Leaves of rhubarb can be extremely dangerous. And the problem is not far-fetched. Rhubarb leaves contain oxalic acid, which is poisonous for humans. However, I can crack one more secret: to die from eating rhubarb leaves, you must eat a large number of them. Anyway, if you ate a piece of a leaf by accident, don't hesitate to call the doctor! You may easily get poisoned and have definite stomach problems. If you grow plants in your garden, remember: you must be careful with some edible plants.

The next dangerous product we are going to discuss is manioc. It is also called "cassava". It is a root crop popular in tropical countries. If you have read any of the folk African fairy tales, you might have noticed that their people ate manioc for many centuries. They can tell you that this plant is nutritious, but it must be cooked properly. First, the root must be soaked for some time because it contains poisonous substances. Then it must be cooked according to definite rules. And even after you have cooked your manioc, it still won't mean it has become absolutely safe to eat. African peoples who are used to eating it boil or bake it, or make flour and fry flatbread. As for me, I can't even imagine myself chewing or even biting such a root! I'm afraid!

It is a well-known fact that Japanese people love eating… meat. They even made up their own ways to eat meat raw. And such a cult of including raw meat in their diet exists only there. It's mind-boggling! But beware of trying raw chicken and beef. Of course, Japan is a country that is famous for its perfect-quality food. Public places have special restrictions on keeping food items (especially cooked) for a long time. You won't find any rotten food here. Everything is delivered fresh and adequately prepared. But still, meat sashimi may be infected by germs and other types of parasites. Chicken and beef are the biggest menace because of that.

And the most menacing dish takes its origin from Japan too. It's pufferfish. Have you heard of it? I can't exactly say whether it is edible or inedible because this sea inhabitant is exceedingly poisonous. It is extremely popular among tourists as well. Trying pufferfish may become a struggle of life and death. Cooks who work with this fish must have a special licence permitting them to cook it.
Pufferfish that were bred on special fish farms are not that poisonous. The thing is, the fishermen who grow them monitor their nutrition. So if you ever want to try such a fish, choose a good restaurant with well-qualified cooks.
