Calgary Stampede
Calgary Stampede is a rodeo festival that takes place in Calgary, Canada, every year. This event is known all over the world and has the biggest equestrian show which involves concerts, carnival rides, exhibitions and agricultural competitions. The festival lasts for 10 days, starting from the first Friday in July. Nearly a million people visit it every year.
The festival originated at the end of the XIX century when the first agricultural fair was arranged in Calgary. Later, Americans held the first rodeo and a festival to honour soldiers returning from World War I. In 1923 the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede came out of the Calgary Industrial Exhibition and became the annual event.
The official opening of the festival is marked by the parade. The parade marshal is chosen among famous politicians, athletes and actors who represent the image of the time.
The mission of the festival is to preserve the unique western heritage and community spirit. Rodeo is the central event of the festival and is usually interesting to watch. It tests the skill and speed of the cowboys and includes bull riding, steer wrestling and four more other activities. The cowboys and cowgirls compete in each discipline to win the major prize of $1,000,000.
Originally started as an agricultural fair, Calgary Stampede still hosts the agricultural exhibition giving a place for local farmers to sell their goods. The market that works within the Calgary Stampede supports local artisans who sell cowboy and western-themed artwork, metal statues, craftwork and foods. There are many competitions during the exhibition, for example, the World Championship Blacksmith Competition or Cutting Event. The cutting event is an equestrian competition where horse riders demonstrate the horse's athleticism and ability to handle cattle.
As the festival approaches, the city of Calgary begins to prepare for the festival. Office buildings are painted with cowboy themes, inhabitants wear western clothes and organise pancake breakfasts and barbecues.
The pancake breakfast is a famous tradition during the festival. Politicians, churches and different community groups host dozens of breakfasts inviting people to try good local food. Some companies provide free breakfast spiced with live auctions, prize giveaways, street dancing or open mic shows. The largest Stampede Breakfast is arranged at the Chinook Centre shopping mall. Every year hundreds of volunteers come to feed thousands of people who want to experience the western spirit of the festival.
