Student City

Tomsk has had a reputation as a student city for countless years. The reason is simple: this small city is famous for its universities. There are many places of study in Tomsk, but the appealing ones are six universities that give quality education to students from different towns and cities.

Young people come here to study from villages and regional centres, nearest cities, and farthest countries, like China, Japan, Vietnam, Italy, Germany, France, and others. Some students come to Tomsk to learn Russian, others come to get a definite profession. European and American students usually come to this Siberian city for an exchange student program.

There are six universities in Tomsk. Tomsk State University is the first university in Siberia that was founded in 1878 by Tsar Alexander III. If you look at the picture of the main building, you may notice a spire. It is an unusual spire: there used to be a church inside the educational institution. The church was destroyed during the Soviet period because the USSR government fought against religion.

Tomsk Polytechnic University today bears the name of Tsar Nicholas II. It was founded by him as a Technological Institute in 1896. The university has 21 educational buildings, a library, and a cultural centre, where diverse entertainment events are held. Plenty of students from abroad choose Tomsk Polytechnic University as their place of study.

Tomsk State Pedagogical University was founded by Tsar Nicholas II in 1902 as a Teacher Institute. Traditionally, it prepares teachers and employees of the educational sphere. The first language faculty appeared there, and people who wanted to connect their lives with learning, teaching or translating languages entered it.

Other universities are also worth mentioning. They prepare doctors, computer and radio systems specialists, and architects. Young people who desire to study in Tomsk have a wide choice of where to go.
