Royal Wedding Dress

Art is not always the canvases of famous artists. Fashion and design often become the property of art and settle in museums for many years.

One work of art of the war years is considered to be the wedding dress of Queen Elizabeth II, who, despite the difficulties of that time, was able to go down the aisle in a luxurious dress, like a work of art.

In those days, the famous couturier was Norman Hartnell. He had previously prepared dresses for royal trips and official meetings.

The design of the royal wedding dress was a secret. Seamstresses were forbidden to talk about the details of the dress, about the model and fabrics. Pearls for the dress were ordered in the USA. The dress took ten thousand pieces. Silk could be ordered in Japan, but at that time the war prevented ordering fabrics from the enemy. The silk from which the dress was sewn was brought from China. The most important thing in the design of the dress was embroidery. Embroidery took up the entire long train as well as the veil. The length of the train stretched for four meters. The seamstresses worked all day, the closer the time came to the wedding, they stayed overnight. The curtains were tightly closed, the entrance to the workshop was guarded.

Finally, the dress was ready. It took six months. During this time, various fake sketches of the dress appeared in the newspapers every now and then, each of which was considered the same Dress of the Queen.

Norman Hartnell later said that he was inspired by Botticelli's paintings. During the Second World War, people needed a symbol of Rebirth. As a basis, he took the painting Spring.

One of the amazing facts about the dress is that many girls sent coupons to the Queen for their wedding dresses. As a result, Elizabeth paid for the dress with a lot of such coupons. People believed in the royal family and loved it. Before the ceremony, Grandmother Maria's tiara broke in half right on Elizabeth's head. Fortunately, it was repaired just before the exit.

There is also an important element in the embroidery of the dress. This is a clover that was embroidered on the train, wishing the Queen good luck in marriage. As far as we know, the Queen and Prince Philip have been married for more than seventy years. The Queen's bouquet consisted of white orchids and myrtle. It was surprising because it was the same myrtle that Queen Victoria kept at the wedding.

A book was written about all this and much more, which showed in artistic design how all the stages of sewing and fitting the famous queen's dress went.

Now the Queen's dress is in the Museum and everyone can enjoy this work of art.
