Russia

A. Russia is located in the Northern Hemisphere, on the mainland of Eurasia, and is the largest country in the world. It occupies 1/6 of the earth's land area, its area exceeds 17 million square kilometres. The borders between Europe and Asia run along the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, so part of Russia is in Europe, part in Asia. Russia is washed by the waters of the Pacific and Arctic Oceans as well as the seas of the Atlantic Ocean: Baltic, Black, Azov and Caspian.

B. The official name of our country is the Russian Federation. Federation means a voluntary association of equal territories and peoples. It includes various subjects: 22 republics as well as autonomous regions and territories. Since olden times, Russia has been inhabited by different peoples. Today representatives of over 160 nationalities live in it.

C. The weather throughout Russia is characterised by a distinct division of the year into cold and warm seasons and large temperature drops. Towards the north and east, the annual temperature range increases, and winter temperatures decrease. Most of the country's territory lies in the temperate zone, the islands of the Arctic Ocean and the northern continental regions—in the Arctic and belts, the Black Sea coast of Russia is located in the Subtropical zone.
