Strategies and useful tips
- It's not necessary to hear and understand every word that's spoken. You need to understand the general meaning of a text.
- All six speakers have a common topic. You need to find the peculiarities of each statement, each extract.
- Read the seven statements. Point out the details that you have to listen for (keywords).
- As you listen for the first time, note for each speaker anything which will help to fix them in your mind (age, gender) and any words/phrases that correspond to what you're listening for.
- Remember that the extracts may contain distracting information, so you should listen to the whole piece before you make a decision. Don't decide too quickly. The word 'but' may be the most important word in the recording!

The famous Soviet-born ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev changed the academic dance, shifting the emphasis from female dance to male. Before Nureyev's time, only the ballerina used to be the key figure of the dance, and the male dancer only supported the ballerina. But, with Nureyev, the ballet became a partnership of two equal figures: a male and a female. Male roles started to receive more choreography. His influence also led to changes in the behaviour of the male dancers—they began to make up more brightly and to bow in a different way.

Today, classical ballet can still be interesting and relevant because there is the possibility of non-traditional ideas and innovations. Before Nureyev's era, there used to be the dictate of tradition. Yet, Rudolf Nureyev was sure that it was not enough for a ballet dancer to give a precise imitation of previous generations' movements. He was convinced that dancers must not only dance but act on the stage. Nureyev himself was a true drama actor. He claimed the dancers had the right to discuss their vision of the role with the choreographer.

When it comes to ballet, the centre of attention is usually on the main dancers and ballerinas. But corp de ballet is also very important. Corp de ballet are the ballet dancers who do not perform the main parts but dance together as a group. Rudolf Nureyev paid great attention to the corps de ballet and that was something nobody had ever done before. Nureyev believed that there could be no star without the corps de ballet and that the level of the solo dancers depended on the level of the corps de ballet. So he paid great attention to the skill of the corps de ballet and set them technically complex choreography.

Perhaps, some people would doubt Nureyev's genius, as he hadn't created his choreographic school. But Nureyev managed to synthesis a variety of choreographic schools in his productions. As he toured all over the world, he managed to learn from the best masters. He borrowed something from each of them, and this resulted in his unique style. By his example, Nureyev proved that classical learning is not an obstacle to mastering another choreographic language.

Nureyev began his career with an escape to freedom, which was regarded by many as a betrayal. It was a difficult decision but he wouldn't have been able to become a ballet star without it. Nureyev remained independent until the end of his days. He did not belong to any particular troupe or theatre. This characteristic is unusual even nowadays. Even outstanding dancers or ballerinas usually belong to a particular theatre where they work. However, freedom-loving and rebellious Nureyev could only be his own master.
Speaker F
What amazes me about Rudolf Nureyev, is the fact that he actively promoted promising young artists. This was a totally new approach. Nureyev could ignore the ballet hierarchy according to which only the renounced ballerinas and dancers could get the solo parts. The only thing that mattered was the aspiration and the talent. Nureyev discovered and trained a lot of brilliant young dancers and helped them to turn into real ballet stars. Many modern managers should learn from his experience.
