Strategies and useful tips

  • Read the statements very carefully and point out the keywords to help you focus on what to listen for.
  • The questions follow the order of the information in the recording.
  • Do not confuse FALSE and NOT STATED. Be particularly careful with Not stated answers—information about this is just not in the text.
  • Remember that answers should be based on information in the text, not what you personally think or know.
  • If any of the statements are connected with feelings/opinions, think about how these might be expressed.
  • Be careful with negatives in the statements.
  • Listen and begin answering. Don't expect to be able to answer everything during the first listen. Finish answering when listening for the second time.
  • Check your answers—have you answered every question?

Interviewer: Good morning, Mr Jacobs. Please, introduce yourself to our radio audience.

Mr Jacobs: Well, good morning, Peter. Thanks a lot for your invitation. I have been working as a psychiatrist for more than 20 years.

Interviewer: So, you're an experienced psychiatrist. That's perfect because today we're speaking about job's choice. As you know, teenagers usually struggle with it. Some of them can't choose the right way in their life. It's not a piece of cake for them.

Mr Jacobs: You're totally correct. Every year I consult more than 100 teenagers after high school. We take tests, analyse their skills and potential. If after my consultation they still have some problems, I recommend taking a gap year before going to college or at the University.

Interviewer: You told me about tests. Do they really work? Are they correct?

Mr Jacobs: Of course. They were developed for teens who want to know more about their inner potential. Some of them can't choose a vocation because they have lots of hobbies or even don't have one.

Interviewer: Let's imagine that I'm a 16-years old boy who has finished high school and doesn't know what to do. Could you give me several pieces of advice? Where should I pay my attention?

Mr Jacobs: Firstly, try to ask yourself: what do I want to do in this world? Maybe you want to help people, to teach kids or furthermore, take care of nature, work without people in the office. Don't forget how sociable you are. Secondly, make a list of professions that are attractive to you. Analyse your skills, how suitable you are to do this work in the future.

Interviewer: What do you mean? How can I analyse myself?

Mr Jacobs: I had a case in my practice. A girl wanted to become a doctor but when we started analysing this profession, she had said that she was afraid of blood. It means that the person may face some difficulties in preparing operations or working in a laboratory. She decided to become a teacher and dedicate her life to helping kids.

Interviewer: Nowadays, we can face a tendency that teens don't want to go to University. They take some courses in special organisations to become a beauty master or an accountant. So can we say that the classical educational system isn't popular and will not be successful in the future?

Mr Jacobs: You're right. Teens don't want to spend lots of money and time to get a degree. But remember that professions such as a politician, engineer or doctor can be taught only at Universities. In European countries, they're well paid and prestigious. I think kids don't choose them because they understand the importance and responsibility. Now we have an opportunity to get a degree in our 30's or 40.

Interviewer: So some of them just don't have money to go to University. I see. So if they want to achieve their dream, they go to courses to get a vocation and save money to get into university.

Mr Jacobs: Yes, you're right. Classical education is expensive and needs lots of effort and time.

Interviewer: Mr Jacobs, thank you for your visit. I hope that teens will use your pieces of advice to choose the right bright way in life. I'd like to add that going to a psychologist isn't shameful or harmful. It's better to discuss problems with a specialist than to suffer from thoughts.

Mr Jacobs: It was my pleasure to come today.
