Interviewer: The problem of getting a good job has always been under discussion. As the situation in the job market is changing, people are becoming more aware of how to impress a potential employer during the first meeting. Today we are hosting a career specialist, Mr Andrews, who has agreed to give us an interview on how to be successful at a job interview. Welcome to the program!

A career specialist: Hello! Great to be here.

Interviewer: Mr Andrews, our listeners are worried about the impression a candidate can make during the job interview. What would you recommend to bear in mind in the first place?

A career specialist: Well, to begin with, the outcome of a successful interview depends on various factors. There can be multiple rounds of interviews before receiving a job offer, so it's important to ensure you approach each one appropriately. The first tip I can share with you is to make a list of your skills, strengths and weaknesses. Think about the examples when you displayed these qualities to show how you handled the situation. It will provide the potential employer with an insight into the way you deal with challenges in your job and turn them into great opportunities.

Interviewer: Am I sure to say that it is a part of a behavioural approach to interviewing?

A career specialist: Yes, you are right. The second step I am sure your employer might expect from you is the answers to some common questions about your working experience and educational background.

Interviewer: Could you tell us more? Could there be any hidden pitfalls?

A career specialist: Well, it all depends on the situation. A good applicant should always be positive and confident. He usually starts by discussing his current role and highlighting relevant achievements and responsibilities. Secondly, he summarises the previous experience and focuses on the results which can help him be prepared for the new job. Thirdly, it is important to explain how his former experience can make him successful in a new role and how it aligns with his career goals.

Interviewer: So much to think over before the interview... Does a job applicant need to write down the most important issues?

A career specialist: I would certainly recommend doing it. What is more, it would be better to role-play the interview with one friend or a family member. A good way to feel confident is to record yourself. Do not forget about your body language.

Interviewer: What about the outfit of a newcomer? Are there any rules on what to wear at a job interview?

A career specialist: The way you dress can help make a positive first impression. The traditional smart attire is a good idea but the applicant's outfit must be appropriate to the situation, so forget about flashy accessories and torn or wrinkled clothes. Before going to the interview, find out if the company has a dress code and what type of culture they promote.

Interviewer: I think clothing is very important because we all know the famous proverb—It's what shows up on the surface that counts. But a person might feel a bit out of place during the interview. Are there any techniques to stay calm?

A career specialist: Oh, you have highlighted a very interesting point. A job applicant can practice stress-management techniques such as meditation, positive thinking and relaxation. Drive to the location of the interview ahead of time. If you feel nervous, visit a restroom before entering the office. If the questions of a recruiter are not clear to you, do not hesitate to ask for details and then you will have more time to give the best answer.

Interviewer: If I were a job applicant, I would also bring a list of questions to ask the employer.

A career specialist: Yes, it is a must, in my opinion. Besides, I would say a list of references is a part of a successful interviewee too.

Interviewer: Thank you Mr Andrews for your valuable advice. I am sure they will help our listeners.

A career specialist: Thank you. My pleasure.
