Many professions have completely disappeared because people don't need them anymore. A coachman whose business was to drive a coach or a carriage was a popular profession in the XVI–XVIII centuries. The coachman was responsible for controlling the horses or other similar animals in a special vehicle designed for the conveyance of passengers. Another name for a coachman was a whip or a coachee.
During the XVIII century, coachmen could be appointed as public officers who delivered important mail to governmental institutions. Also, they were employed as private drivers and movers carrying the owner's staff or delegating these responsibilities to the other employees.
Сoachmen were assisted by footmen who helped to deal with any circumstances the coachmen were not able to control.
