The Golem is a legendary animated human-like being made of clay and mud. The Golem has always been portrayed as a tall and muscular creature. Nowadays, due to the film industry, the Golem is usually seen as a giant creature with illuminated eyes.
The most famous story about the Golem is connected with the Czech city of Prague. The tale goes back to the 16th century. A religious man called Rabbi Löw was in search of a way to protect his people from the violent rulers. He knew the magical way to transform the four elements into living creatures. So he took some mud and turned it into a super being—the Golem. The word "golem" means "shapeless mass" or "raw material". To bring the Golem to life, Rabbi Löw put a clay tablet into its mouth. To deactivate the creature and let it rest, he took the tablet out of the Golem's mouth. One day the Golem became violent and outrageous and started destroying everything on its way. It had caused great damage to the area before Rabbi Löw managed to take the tablet out of its mouth. He never dared to revive the Golem and it remained locked for centuries.
Rabbi Löw was a historical figure, but there is no evidence he ever created a golem. But the legend of the Golem has always attracted people. There have even been attempts to find the Golem, but nothing has been found.
Other stories about the Golem were only replicas of this original story. Prague's Golem is the most famous of all, and the image of the Golem with its violent glare is widely exploited by the Prague tourist industry.
