Most musical instruments we usually play and listen to appeared many years ago. But there is one that was designed in 2000. It's called hang. The name of the instrument was given by its creators. Another story says that this name comes from German dialect and means «hand».

The instrument was developed by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer in Switzerland. Before they created it, they'd been studying Caribbean steel drum and different other drums from all over the world for many years.

Hang belongs to percussion musical instruments. It consists of two metal semi-spheres. Upper part is called DING and lower part is called GU. On the DING part there are 7 or 8 tone zones. The sound you produce depends on the zone you touch and on the intensity of your touch or dash. On the GU part there is a resonant hole. You can produce sound from hang by several methods: touch it with finger tips, play by thumbs or hand base. Usually a musician puts hang on the knees or sits on the floor and puts the instrument in front of him.

For several years after the invention it was possible to buy hang only ordering it from the company of its creators. Or course, the rest of the world is interested in the new musical instrument and Russia is not an exception. But the first hang concert was held in Russia only in 2008 in Moscow club Tea Museum. It was performed by an Israeli musician. Musicians in Russia started studying as well and in 2010 the first Moscow festival of Hand and Didgeridoo* was carried out. The concert was overcrowded.

Now this event is held on a regular basis several times a year. A special club of people who play variations of hang called handpan instruments functions in Moscow. Since 2016 you can attend annual drum festival UFO where hang players are always present.
