When we write a story, we use linking words to show the order of the events in the story.

For an event that happens at the beginning of the series of the events: First/At first...

For an event that happens after another event: Then/Next/After that…

For an event that happens shortly after another event: Immediately/No sooner … than/Hardly… when/Just as …

To show that an event had happened before another event: By the time/Before…

To show that some activity was in progress when an event happened: While/As…

For an event that happens at the end of the series of the events: In the end/Finally/Eventually/At last…
