Drifting on the Ice
[ ] While the ice floe was drifting away from the shore, one of the fishermen called the rescue service. The people on the shore contacted emergency services, too. Some of the fishermen desperately ventured to use small pieces of ice as rafts to get to the shore. The fishermen knew that in case of heavy clouds, no helicopter could be sent to find them, and they might freeze to death. Oleg and Mikhail decided to stay on the ice floe and wait. After what seemed like an eternity, they heard a helicopter chopping and a boat engine roaring. The emergency services had come to their rescue. The rescue operation lasted for six hours. By the time everyone was rescued, the gap between the ice floe and the coast had become 300 meters wide.
[ ] At last, Oleg and Mikhail were safe and sound on the shore, along with other stranded fishermen. Fortunately, no one needed medical help. Oleg and Mikhail felt relieved and embarrassed. Just as they stepped onto the shore, there were reporters around them. "Today's ice fishing was a silly thing to do. We're glad it's over", Oleg confessed to the reporters. "Now we know it's important to pay attention to the authorities' warnings, and we'll never go ice fishing if the ice is thin and melting", Mikhail added seriously.
[ ] At first, Oleg and Mikhail checked the ice for thickness. Then, they started making holes in the ice. No sooner had they caught their first fish than a blinding snowstorm started. Suddenly, Mikhail heard a loud cracking noise and heard other fishermen shouting, "The ice is moving! Let's leave!" Worried, the friends looked around and saw the ice breaking away from the shore and starting to drift away. Some fishermen dashed for safety and managed to jump over a gap, but most men were trapped on a drifting ice floe. Oleg and Mikhail were stranded on the ice, too.
[ ] One windy February morning, Oleg and Mikhail set out to the shore in Oleg's powerful 4x4 to go ice fishing. The weather had been getting warmer lately, and the sun was shining brightly. The authorities had already warned everyone about the dangers of ice fishing as the ice was thin and melting. Yet, the two friends were too keen on fishing and decided to try their luck. Excited and eager, they joined a group of silent fishermen on the sparkling ice of the bay.
