Disappearing Villages
In Russia, everybody knows what a rural locality is: many \(\boxed{32}\) \(\underline{ }\) have either gardens or relatives who live in the countryside. But now, a typical Russian village is diverse from what it used to be in the past.
It is a well-known fact that all the territories in Russia are divided into regions, like Tomsk region ("oblast"), Krasnoyarsk region ("krai") or Yamal-Nenets autonomous area ("okrug"). As we can see from the original Russian names, all the regions have different denominations depending on their status. \(\boxed{33}\) \(\underline{ }\) these differences, the rural problems are almost the same: the Russian village is disappearing.
In \(\boxed{34}\) \(\underline{ }\) childhood, we can remember a settlement full of people who worked in local establishments. Almost every village had its school, kindergarten, a club with a library, and other structural divisions. People kept various farm animals like horses, cows, sheep, pigs and different kinds of poultry.
But now the situation has changed with the villages. And here, we must see the distinction between a village and a regional centre. The latter is a large settlement considered the most important in their location (in Russian, we call them "rayon", they are smaller parts of a region). This settlement normally \(\boxed{35}\) \(\underline{ }\) like a big village. Sometimes, it can be a cross between a village and a small town. People from the countryside began to move there because, in the regional centre, you may find more opportunities for your well-being. Why does it happen?
The reason is that a typical Russian village was built for implementing a definite type of work. For instance, in Siberia, people who came there to live had to work in forest production. Villages were considered temporary accommodation: according to approximate calculations, about forty or fifty years of living while it is possible to work there. But people stayed there \(\boxed{36}\) \(\underline{ }\) families; they got attached to their places and did not want to move because they had all the infrastructure.
However, after the main work in the forest was finished, plenty of people \(\boxed{37}\) \(\underline{ }\) unemployed. They started moving to the nearest promising places, like regional centres, towns or cities. Families, teachers, doctors and other specialists began to abandon their villages. Schools and kindergartens started to close. The young left rural localities, and only some elderly people who were still attached to them stayed. They are too weak to keep the cattle, so usually, they find no difference between buying food and keeping an animal. In the end, these old people die in their villages or their children make them move with them. Thus, settlements in the countryside become empty.
What can we do to \(\boxed{38}\) \(\underline{ }\) the Russian village? We must give people a chance to have a future.
