What We Love in School
It is not a secret that when you hear "What do you like best about school?", you feel bored or even disgusted. But why do negative emotions appear, and what is the real attitude of school students towards the place that gives them knowledge?
When a child enters the first form (speaking about Russia), they are likely to enjoy school. It happens mostly for two reasons. The first one is that the process of study passes in the form of a game. At Primary school, everything is bright and colourful. Books and tasks are usually fascinating; there are many excursions to different places and plenty of free time after school. The second reason is that today's parents are conscious, and most children are ready for school. They can read, say some simple foreign words and phrases, count and do the multiplication. It means that everything goes easy for the children, and they get used to being praised.
But the older a young person gets, the stricter school rules become. The texts in Literature become longer and harder to understand, the mathematical actions turn out to be more complicated than just arithmetics, and English appears to have grammar, as well! If parents help their children at Primary school, they usually stop doing it at Secondary. Sometimes, it happens because their children grow up and become more independent, and sometimes because the parents have forgotten the more complicated variant of their school programme.
Teenagers begin to have other important issues like socialisation matters. The first love often happens at the age of 12–14 years of age. Communication issues start to be urgent ones, and studies take a back seat. Young people are likely to have serious hobbies and interests that also require time. And these things may influence the teenager's future profession, so it will be incorrect to leave them without any attention.
Sometimes, children and teenagers do not have friends at school and feel solitary. It is a valid excuse to hate school, as well. But when we grow up into mature adults and look back at our school past, we usually remember many positive aspects. Mariya Ivanovna, who produced plenty of funny expressions, when she got angry. Or Ivan Petrovich, who did his best to make you understand mathematics. Maybe Irina Mikhailovna, who showed you fantastic films in German, and discussed them after watching. Or Raisa Fyodorovna, who brought modern songs in English and learnt the lyrics together with you.
Every former child can remember several facts that make them smile about their school lives. Thus, the question "What do you like about school?" just needs time and good memories.
