One Louise and Two Sarahs

Surely anyone can name not even one but several American writers, actors, directors and musicians. Many will be able to list American actors and musicians. Someone will remember Andy Warhol or Grant Wood if they argue about artists. But practically no one can name female artists, except for inquisitive art critics. Meanwhile, there is a huge number of them, let's name only a \({\boxed{32}  \underline{ }}\) .

Louise Bourgeois was born at the beginning of the XX century in France. She had a difficult childhood, filled with trauma from her father's betrayal and the death of her mother. In 1939, she moved to the United States with her husband and began to live and create there. Louise studied a lot and created many masterpieces of sculpture and installation. She was very popular \({\boxed{33}  \underline{ }}\) her contemporaries because in her work not only did she combine modern trends in art but also touched upon social problems in her work. She very often turned to the topics of child abuse, women's rights and family conflicts. The house she portrayed has always been a cage. So it was remembered by her in her childhood. The image of the mother, for example, in her famous sculpture, is always filled \({\boxed{34}  \underline{ }}\) care and kindness, covering Louise as a child. The image of the father, \({\boxed{35}  \underline{ }}\) the contrary, is cold, repulsive and painful.

Three children were born into a family of bakers and abolitionists, many of whom became artists. Sarah Mapps Douglass attended college at the age of 14, and then briefly \({\boxed{36}  \underline{ }}\) in New York, then got a job as a teacher in a school, and later opened her own school for African American girls. Sarah was an accomplished and talented artist. Since American galleries did not want to buy her work, she used all possible ways to express herself. For example, she decorated her letters with her own drawings and signatures.

Sarah Dodson was the foremost and most famous American female painter in the XIX century. Her talent began to manifest itself very early, but her father was categorically opposed to painting his daughter because he believed that women \({\boxed{37}  \underline{ }}\) not seriously engage in painting. \({\boxed{38}  \underline{ }}\) his death, Sarah went to Paris to study with the best artists. Her artistic interests were very diverse. She painted paintings in the classical Rococo style, Impressionism and Art Nouveau.
