Painting by Numbers
I envy people who have the innate talent of an artist. I don't possess one. Of course, I can draw a dog that can be identified as a dog, not as a cat or a crocodile. I understand that in a picture the objects that are far from us must be of a smaller size than the ones that are close to us. I can help my younger brother make colourful illustrations for a school project. The human figures that I draw have realistic body and face proportions. However, what I do is not art at all. My drawings and paintings are obviously poor.
Asking why some people can create beautiful images while others can't is like asking why some people can sing better than others, or why some people are good at writing prose and poetry while others consider creating texts torture. Art is a talent and gift. To deny this would be as unreasonable as to claim that any of us can draw like Aivazovsky, write poetry like Pushkin or sing like famous opera singers. Undoubtedly, there is no genius without painstaking work. Laziness and greatness are incompatible. But a person who is not born with a natural gift will never be able to compete with a gifted artist no matter how hard they practise.
Nevertheless, some people believe that anyone can master the skill of an artist. They claim that what we call a natural gift is the ability to perceive the world in a special way. The talent of an artist is just the innate ability to correctly estimate the size, shape and colour of an object when looking at it. It is this ability that lets artists create perfect images. The main problem of those who can't draw or paint is that they see objects incorrectly. They do not have the special vision of space, the vision of shadow and light, or the vision of the way objects are positioned against each other.
I can put up with the fact that I can't draw or paint with the ease and grace of great artists. However, that doesn't mean I have done away with my desire to create beautiful paintings. One day at my friend's house I saw a very beautiful painting depicting a London street with the outlines of Big Ben which are familiar to everyone. When I asked my friend about this picture, she said it was painted by numbers. Painting by numbers means you colour pictures divided into shapes. Each shape is marked with a number that corresponds to a particular colour. As you colour the shapes, the picture emerges as a whole. I had seen painting by numbers kits at shops before, but I never paid any attention to them, considering them childish. However, when I saw that painting at my friend's, I got interested and bought a painting by numbers kit. It was a beautiful lake landscape. I didn't expect it to capture me much, but it turned out to be a fascinating pastime. The first picture was followed by the second, and then the third. The most pleasant thing was that these paintings really looked nice. I felt so proud of them as though they were true paintings.
Painting by numbers helps you realise that images consist of multiple shapes of different colours. The shapes don't make sense individually, but they create the image if perceived as a whole. As you practise painting by numbers, you start perceiving such colour shapes without the assistance of a draft. You shift your attention from the whole image onto tiny fragments and the colours that should be used to paint them.
