Clauses of consequence
Придаточное предложение следствия — это часть сложноподчинённого предложения, где формулируется логическое продолжение мысли главного предложения.
В придаточных предложениях следствия используются следующие конструкции: as a result, therefore, consequently, as a consequence, so, so that, so as, in order to / not to, in order that, for somebody / something to / not to, with a view to / not to, so much / little, such a, such a lot of, because, owing to, due to, that is why, for this reason, on that ground, since (because), in case.
Придаточные предложения следствия выражают следующие отношения между главным и придаточным предложением:
— причина и результат / следствие: The traffic is heavy in Shanghai, and that is why smog is almost inevitable;
— причина и последующие действия: We couldn't find the key, so we could not open the door;
— степень влияния фактора и количество последствий: She was so angry, (that) she could not speak; There was such a lot of snow in Tokyo last winter, that we could hardly use our car;
— действие и цель: We stayed out all night, so that we could watch the meteor storm; We took our blankets along in order not to suffer from cold in the desert at night;
— действие и объяснение: I had to go to the supermarket five miles away because / the reason being my fridge was completely empty;
— действие с учётом будущих обстоятельств: I'll keep some chicken salad for you in case you feel hungry; Let's draw a line here unless somebody has more ideas share.
Примечание: союз subsequently выражает последовательность действий, а не причинно-следственные отношения: He realised that he had hurt Helen's feelings and subsequently he apologized. Сравните с предложением, где союз consequently помогает выразить последствия или результат: He realised that he had deeply insulted his best friend. Consequently, they parted and never met again.
