Type 2 conditionals (unreal present) are used to express imaginary situations which are contrary to facts in the present, and therefore, are unlikely to happen in the present or the future.
If-clause
If + past simple/ past continuous….,
Main clause
would/could/might + bare infinitive
e.g. If Ihadmore free time, Iwould becomea better pianist.
If Iwas notworkingtoday, Icould goto the cinema with friends.
- We can use either were or was for 1st and 3rd person singular in the if-clause.
- We can also use the structure If I were you, ... to give advice.
- when / unless / as soon as / as long as / provided that can be used instead of if.
