O. Henry
William Sydney Porter was born in 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina. It was the time of the Civil War in America. William's father was a doctor, and his uncle was a governor of North Carolina in 1865–1868. When he was only three years old, little William lost his mother. Therefore, he was brought up by his aunt.
At 16, the future writer worked as a chemist in his uncle's pharmacy. William was good at studies, and in a year, he became a licensed pharmacist. In 1881, he caught a serious illness and had to move to Texas to change the climate.
In Texas, after the recovery, William played musical instruments and sang in a church choir. There in Austin, at the age of 17, he met his future wife, Athol Estes. They got married despite her mother's disapproval. In 1881, Athol gave birth to their son, who died after his birth. Their daughter Margaret was born a year later, in 1889. William was a bank worker then he had a job in a newspaper.
While living in Houston (Texas), William was arrested for embezzlement. To avoid prison, the writer ran away and lived in different places. He was in Honduras when he found out the news that his wife was lying close to death. The writer surrendered to trial, but he got a delay because of his wife's illness.
William started his writing career before prison. He composed under different pen names, and O. Henry became the most popular. After prison, his career was launched, and he wrote more than 200 tales. People adored him and waited until new stories were published.
