What makes a good leader? Many people can give different ideas about what leadership skills are. A great leader should be communicative, encouraging, honest, loyal, flexible and much more. Every person can give his characteristics of a strong leader. Today many scientists consider that an effective leader should possess emotional intelligence. But what does it mean to be emotionally intelligent?
According to American psychologists, people with a high degree of emotional intelligence know how to deal with their emotions and where they came from, and how their feelings affect other people.
There are five key factors of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills.
Being self-aware means you know what you feel and how your emotions affect other people. You know about your strong and weak points, and you can adjust your behaviour to the needs of a team. It is closely connected with self-regulation, which means being able to stay in control.
Motivated leaders move to their goals, they have high standards of their work.
Being empathic means the leader can imagine himself in his colleagues' shoes and therefore give constructive feedback to the needs of his employees.
Social skills are of major importance too. The ability to resolve conflicts and praise others can show that a leader is a person focused on self-improvement and self-education.
To be effective, leaders must have a clear understanding of how they influence other people and work on the key factors to excel in the future.
