Dashes
The main function of a dash (—) is to give some [additional|further]information.
Dashes are used to [separate|combine]extra information or a comment from the rest of the sentence.
Example: The years at university—as our parents told us—are the happiest days in our lives.
A dash is used to separate [clauses|parts]of the sentence. It is mostly used in [formal|colloquial]language instead of a colon or semi-colon to make the writing more [specific|dramatic].
Example: You betrayed me—how can I trust you again?
A dash is put before the [sheet|list]of things if it is used with the same noun.
Example: We bought some dairy in the shop—milk, cream, cheese.
A dash is used in the place a [short|long]pause to make a special effect or to show that the speaker/writer is [happy|nervous].
Example: Miriam was sitting upright looking at her partner—Sam.

However, dashes can be replaced by [full stops|commas].
