New Holland Island in St Petersburg

New Holland in St Petersburg is a unique triangular man-made island. Dating back to the beginning of the XVIII century, the island A_____ some shipbuilding facilities and canals. It is located in the Admiralty district in the centre of St Petersburg and is surrounded by the Moika River, the Admiralty Canal and the Kryukov Canal.

The island has a rich history. Peter the Great invited Dutch specialists to create a new port on this site. To facilitate shipbuilding, the Russian emperor B_____, so the Admiralty Canal and the Kryukov Canal appeared. Of course, there was a need to store building material somewhere, so the island was the exact place for that. It is believed, the name "New Holland" C_____, who Peter the Great invited to take part in the project.

In the 1730s New Holland had sets of wooden barracks for the oak lumber for shipbuilding, stored either in small pieces or in large planks. Later, the barracks were rebuilt into stone ones for better air circulation. Many famous architects worked on the island and transformed it into a unique architectural ensemble. The facades of New Holland were decorated with D_____ to the internal part of the island.

The central landmark of the island is a ring-shaped building that was used as a Naval Prison. The unusual shape of the prison E_____. Surprisingly, it was the very place where the Bolsheviks announced their seizure of power in 1917.

Today the territory of New Holland is reconstructed and is used as a recreation area. Now it is an open-air park that operates all year round. It hosts many interesting exhibitions, events and workshops. The round building in the middle of F_____ and places numerous bars, shops and restaurants. There is also a big skating rink, a restaurant and a playground.
