The profession of a lamplighter has sunk into oblivion because their services are no longer required. A lamplighter was a person who maintained gas street lights. As many gas lights have long been replaced by electric systems, this profession has become extremely rare.

The lamplighter duties included lighting lamp posts each evening using a wick on a long pole. Secondly, a lamplighter had to carry a ladder to change the gas mantles or oil in the street lamps. At dawn, the lamplighter had to return to put them out using a small hook on the same pole. Early street lights were solid lighting sources with wicks. Now all the street lamps operate automatically with the means of electricity.

Gaslighting was commonly used in the XIX century and therefore required lamplighters. Today the minority of representatives of this profession still work in some European countries—England, Croatia, Poland and some others. Local authorities believe the gaslighting gives the nostalgic effect of feeling the historical authenticity of the place.
