Strategies and useful tips

  1. It's not necessary to hear and understand every word that's spoken. You need to understand the general meaning of a text.

  2. All six speakers have a common topic. You need to find the peculiarities of each statement, each extract.

  3. Read the seven statements. Point out the details that you have to listen for (keywords).

  4. As you listen for the first time, note for each speaker anything which will help to fix them in your mind (age, gender) and any words/phrases that correspond to what you're listening for.

  5. Remember that the extracts may contain distracting information so you should listen to the whole piece before you make a decision. Don't decide too quickly. The word "but" may be the most important word in the recording!

  6. It seems to them that children have too much time to rest.

  7. Unfair fate of technical specialities.

  8. The choice of the subject determines the interests, but not the comprehensive development.

  9. Constant parental control causes aggression.

  10. Preparation that eats up the student's time and attention.

  11. The formation of a sports nation begins in schools.

  12. A type of training that does not perform communicative functions sufficiently.

In our country, schools can determine the list of subjects themselves. Schoolchildren can also choose the subjects that attract them the most. On the one hand, they will be interested and they will spend time on those items that will be useful to them in the future. On the other hand, they lose the opportunity to gain new knowledge, which forms a worldview. It seems strange to me when a person knows the periodic table by heart, while not having heard of Shakespeare.

There are many humanities specialities in education now: an economist, a teacher, a lawyer. School graduates are choosing exact sciences less and less as the basis of their profession. It is a pity that physics and mathematics have given way to history and a foreign language. I think it's about government orders: important research centres and factories are being closed in the country. Thus, those who want to develop technical specialities move abroad.

Speaker C

In countries like China, sports prevail in schools. Team competitions of classes, mass exercises every day, in which the headmaster participates, and other events are aimed at improving the health of students. Even the school photo of Chinese students is a tracksuit. This is a good way for the state to pursue a healthy lifestyle policy.

Russian schools are gradually adopting Western-style features. Because of the complexity of state exams, children forget about all other equally important subjects while preparing for them. Thus, their knowledge in other fields is very little. Passing the exam itself does not imply deep knowledge, most often it is memorized texts, templates and cliches. Teachers and parents want children to gain invaluable experience that will be useful to them in life.

On average, the duration of holidays in Eastern European countries lasts all summer. researchers in the field of education believe that during this time the student forgets what he studied and therefore call for shortening the summer holidays. Since in addition to the summer students have about a month off in total, the summer holidays should be reduced to a month. But the students themselves are obviously against such changes.

Speaker F

With the advent of distance education, many parents are concerned that their children and, possibly, grandchildren will no longer have a typical childhood. If this type of education becomes dominant, then many children will not socialize enough. We already have very little contact with others in real life. For a child at early school age, daily contact with peers is very important.
