A.The Upside-Down House was built in 2008 in the seaside resort of Trassenheide. It is the first such accommodation in Germany. Behind the strange residential dwelling stand the Polish architects Klaudiuzs Golos and Sebastian Mikicuk. The aim of the project is to give visitors a different view of everyday things. "The World Stands on its Head" is the official name of the project, and even all the rooms inside were created upside down.

B.The Queen Anne Style Victorian mansion (California, USA) is renowned for its size, architectural curiosities, and lack of any master building plan. After her husband's death in 1881, Sarah Winchester began building her mansion. She did not commission an architect and added some random things so the home contains numerous oddities like doors or stairs that go nowhere, windows overlooking other rooms, and stairs with odd-sized risers. After her death, many people attributed these oddities to her belief in ghosts.

C. The toilet-shaped house in Suwon, South Korea is named Haewoojae, which means "a place of sanctuary where one can solve one's worries". It was designed by the chairman of the organising committee of the Inaugural General Assembly of the World Toilet Association, who hopes that it will bring attention to the world's sanitation problems.

D. Over 110 rooms were carved into the side of a cliff about 92km northwest of Beijing in the Tang Dynasty. They were occupied during China's Tang Dynasty (618-907) by the Xiyi people. The cliff house is known as the largest cliff residence ever found in China and is also known as "the biggest maze of China". Stone steps and ladders were used to connect the different levels, and inside were found stone wardrobes, beds and chairs. At the highest level of the communal cave was found a two-storey stone house, featuring furniture which may have belonged to the leader of the tribe.

E.The nautilus is a unique shell-shaped house, designed by architect Javier Senosiain in Mexico City in Mexico. It is very unusual and bold. Following the idea of "Bio-Architecture" — basing buildings on the natural principles of organic forms and bringing us back to creating harmony with nature, the architect was inspired to bring marine life into this design.

F.Built around a small artificial lake, nine "Earth Houses" look like hobbit holes, containing modern apartment-like interiors, each including a modular kitchen and luxury bathroom. Architect Peter Vetsch designed the houses to blend into the landscape, using the earth as protection from rain, wind and ice. Due to the success of Earth Houses, Vetsch is creating and building many more such mini-communities in Switzerland and Germany, using similar techniques.

G.Known as the world's narrowest house, Keret House is only 122cm wide and is squeezed between two buildings in the centre of Warsaw, Poland. Designed by Polish architect Jakub Szczesny, the house is meant to provide a home for travelling writers, as no one can stay too long in such a small space. It has already become a Warsaw icon and is already on the tourist map.
