A.Archery is a sport in which athletes compete in the accuracy of shooting a bow. This sport uses bow and arrows, just like the ones used for hunting and warfare in previous centuries. However, the objective of the game is not to kill, but to strike the center of the target with arrows. Once used for hunting, combat and recreation, today archery as a competitive sport has spread far and wide with over 83 different nations participating in Olympics archery competitions. This sport is known all over the world.

B.The exact time of the emergence of archery, as well as the place of its origin, have not been defined yet. Although, it is known for sure that people had bows at the end of the Stone Age. About 3 thousand years ago, bows began to be used not only for hunting, but also as a weapon. By the late 19th century, archery began to develop as a sport, and it became so widespread that an association was founded in nearly all major nations. At the turn of the 20th century, it joined the Olympics, and by the 1930s a set of international rules had been made. Today, it holds its place as one of the most prestigious events in the world.

C.Archery is played both indoors and outdoors. In an indoor match, the distance from the shooting line to the target varies from 18 meters to 25 meters, while for outdoor archery the distance between the shooting line and the target goes up to 30 meters to 90 meters. In the Olympic Games, the standard distance is 70 meters. Archery competitions are usually divided into 'ends', which is a segment where an archer can shoot 3 to 6 arrows based on the rules of the competition. It is only after the ends that the players get to know their scores and collect their arrows.

D.The first item that one will find on the list of things needed to practise archery is, of course, a bow. In target shooting, at the official competitions under the guidance of FITA (World Archery Federation), the two following types of archery bows are used: the classic bow and the compound bow. Another important part of archery equipment is an arrow. Modern archery arrows are composite. They consist of a head, shaft, spine, and nock. For archers, fitting the arrows is very important. They must correspond to a lot of individual qualities, first of all, to the length of the arms.

E.Scoring in archery is very simple: you just add up the number of points based on where your arrows hit the target. The highest score for a single arrow is 10 for hitting the inner gold ring, while the least (for hitting the outer white ring) is one point. Arrows missing the target altogether do not score at all. In Olympic competition, athletes must shoot 72 arrows in 12 phases, with the overall cumulative score deciding their ranking. Tournaments vary in format and the number of arrows competitors must shoot and the distance to the target.

F. Archery can't exist without targets, which are made of paper and concentric circles of different colours are depicted on them. Targets are attached to special shields, which are made of durable material that prevents the passage of arrows through them. The size of the archery target depends on the competitive distance. Inside the target, there is another circle with a diameter that is twice as small as the other one, it is necessary for resolving disputable situations when the points are equal. Also, it is used for registering world records.

G. In an archery competition, the winner is either the person who has the highest cumulative total score after a set number of arrows, or the one who has successfully overcome all opponents faced in a knockout scenario. In the event of a tied score, the archer with the highest number of 10s (including inner 10s) is declared the victor. If that number is also equal, the one with the greater number of inner 10s is the winner.
