A.Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honouring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. This holiday occupies a traditional place in American history. Anyone who grew up in this country understands it to be a celebration of wartime sacrifice and patriotic valour. It's a holiday with its origins in the Civil War, a time of untold division, death, and disease.
B. The American Civil War ended in the spring of 1865. Over 620,000 soldiers died in the four-year conflict. To commemorate the lives lost in battle, Americans began holding tributes each spring during the late 1860s. They decorated the graves of those who had died with flowers. In 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organisation of Northern Civil War veterans, finally designated the 30th of May as Decoration Day with a strong speech on the importance of remembering those who had died defending the Union.
C. From the original 1868 date, Decoration Day continued to be celebrated on the 30th of May for decades after its initial observance. It gradually became known as Memorial Day as years passed. However, in 1968, 100 years after the original date, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This established Memorial Day's official observance on the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for federal employees.
D. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Some citizens wear or hold red poppies to symbolise those who have fallen in the war. It's the three-day weekend that kicks off the summer season and the time for hanging out at the beach and lakes and barbecuing with friends and family. Towns and cities across the country host grand Memorial Day parades every year, often featuring senior veterans and military personnel. Some of the biggest parades take place in New York City, Chicago, and Washington.
E. Memorial day history couldn't be complete without the birth of the the "National Moment of Remembrance", which was a resolution passed in December in 2000 that asks Americans, wherever they are at 3:00 pm local time on Memorial Day, to pause and be quiet for one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States.
F. Service members, veterans and their families know there is a big difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. While Veterans Day, November 11, is a day set aside to celebrate all veterans, Memorial Day is a somber holiday dedicated to honouring military fallen, with a special focus on those killed during military service or through enemy contact. Both holidays often include parades, ceremonies and celebrations.
G. Memorial Day is a strictly American holiday. But other countries around the world also honour their fallen military forces with a day of remembrance. For example, in Britain, people celebrate Remembrance Sunday to remember armed forces members who have died in all conflicts since World War I. In Belgium, there is Armistice Day. They celebrate the end of World War I and remember all of the country's fallen soldiers.
