A.Out of the many federal subjects of Russia, the Kaliningrad region is the odd one out. It sits on the coast of the Baltic Sea surrounded by Poland and Lithuania, but none of the other Russian territories. In other words, it's an exclave, which means that there is no border between here and the rest of Russia. The place is tiny — one of the smallest regions in the country. Nevertheless, it has one of the best-performing economies, thanks in part to tourism.
B.Up until the Middle Ages, the territory of the modern Kaliningrad region was inhabited by Baltic peoples known today as the Old Prussians. They were conquered by the Teutonic Order in the early 1200s. Teutons were a German catholic Order from the era of the Crusades. On the foundations of the destroyed Prussian settlement, the Teutonic knights founded Königsberg, and invited more Germans to live there side by side with the Old Prussians.
C.After World War II, Eastern Prussia was divided into three parts between the USSR, Lithuania, and Poland. In 1946, Königsberg was renamed Kaliningrad in honour of a famous Soviet politician, Mikhail Kalinin. He was the official head of state of the USSR. Many Germans left the regions, and people from Soviet republics arrived to replace them. Cities, towns, rivers, and other geographical features were given new names in Russian. Eventually, Kaliningrad officially became a part of the Russian Soviet republic.
D.The capital of Kaliningrad region is the city of Kaliningrad. During World War II, the city was almost completely destroyed but was rebuilt under the new Soviet administration. The majority of old German buildings were destroyed during WWII, but some did survive and were restored. Thus, nowadays, the city thus is a unique mixture of old German, Soviet and modern architecture.
E.Being the most western point of the USSR, the Kaliningrad region became a major strategic territory and thus was closed to any foreign visitors during the Soviet period. However, these days, Kaliningrad is one of the most popular cities in the Russian Federation for both Russian and foreign travellers. About 2 million people come there annually to learn about the city's history and enjoy its wonderful views. Kaliningrad is filled with parks and green areas, as well as museums, theatres and concert halls.
F.Königsberg — and later Kaliningrad — were home to many talented people: artists, scientists, musicians, and others. Probably the most famous people who were born or lived in Königsberg were the following: philosopher Immanuel Kant, writers Theodor Hoffman and Thomas Mann. Later, Kaliningrad was the hometown of cosmonaut Alexey Leonov and popular Russian singer Oleg Gazmanov. Interestingly, Mikhail Kalinin, in whose honour the city was named, never visited it in his life.
