2. What parts does New Zealand consist of physically?
3. What kind of landscape does New Zealand have?
4. Where is New Zealand situated?
5. What is the climate in New Zealand like in different seasons?
6. What is the political structure of New Zealand?
7. Which continent does New Zealand belong to?
A.New Zealand is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean about 1200 miles or 2000 kilometres off the coast of the Australian continent and about 600 miles or 1000 kilometres from the nearest major islands of Fiji, Tonga, and New Caledonia. So, technically, France is their closest neighbour.
B.New Zealand is made up of two main large islands named the North Island or Te-Ika a-Maui, which takes up about 42% of the land mass and holds about 3/4 of the population, and the larger but less populated South Island or Te Waipou-Namu at about 56% of the landmass. The remaining 2% of the land mass includes hundreds of interior and outlying islands. The largest of them, Stewart Island, is situated close to the South Island. There are also outlying tiny island chains, like the northernmost Kermadec Islands.
C.New Zealand is a unitary state divided into 16 councils: 11 regional councils and 5 unitary regional councils. Chatham Island acts as their own special territorial authority. There are also 3 New Zealand Realm territories and free association island nations. They are Tokelau, the Cook Islands, and Niue. Tokelau is considered a non-self-governing dependent territory. These territories belong to New Zealand, but they all have their own languages, customs, and their own constitutions.
D.The second-largest city in New Zealand, Wellington, is the capital, the southernmost capital in the world. However, Auckland up north is the largest city which holds about a third of the entire population of the country with the largest and busiest airport, Auckland International. Otherwise, Christchurch on the South Island is the third-largest city.
E.There is one question that challenged cartographers for centuries. If New Zealand is just several islands in the Pacific, which continent do they fall under? To put it simple, New Zealand is not a part of Australia but is a part of the broader region known as Oceania. It includes Australia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Technically, Australia and New Zealand together are called Australasia.
F.New Zealand is a country widely-known for its mind-blowing sceneries, that you could have seen in many movies and TV-shows (The Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and many others). The country is located in the so-called Ring of Fire on the convergence of the Pacific and Australian lithospheric plates. This makes the country subject to earthquakes and volcanic activity. There are about 83 known volcanoes of all types, the largest active one being Ruapehu on North Island.
