Two different people were asked about the importance of alternative energy. Read their answers and put the parts of the sentences below into the gaps.

Write one letter in each gap.

Comment 1

Most of the energy that is consumed today for commercial or residential purposes comes from non-renewable sources including oil, gas, and coal. These sources are finite and the process of extraction has a negative impact on the environment. Unfortunately, we pollute the nature every day. Instances include contaminated water bodies, soil contamination, and dependent on coal-based power plants. Oil production is largely from a few countries that have higher potential for geopolitical risk, thereby adding to the spectre of price shocks across the entire spectrum in case of a crisis.

Alternative energy (wind, solar, geothermal, etc.) offers the benefits of a renewable, clean source of energy but also helps and ultimately has a positive impact on our health and the environment.

Comment 2

We need energy a lot. Humans have been dependent upon energy since we lit our first fire. Our dependence is now a full-on addiction — most first-world countries would literally collapse for any extended period of time.

in the next decade. It is something that basically means any kind of energy that is not a form of energy we've been using for a while. So, solar is "alternative", while coal is "traditional". But, that is all changing fast. The majority of new electricity production globally is from what we've been calling "alternative" sources — mainly solar and wind. So, at what point do those become "traditional", and something else becomes alternative? I suspect within the next 5–10 years. Our energy mix is changing so fast that terms like alternative really don't make sense anymore.

A. atmospheric pollution impacting residents of cities

B. Alternative energy is a term that will not exist

C. to provide energy independence from hydrocarbon imports

D. if their energy supply was cut off
