Relative Pronouns

Note!

  1. We use that instead of who, whom or which in relative clauses to refer to people, animals and things. We use it to introduce defining clauses only. That is more informal than who, whom or which.
  2. We use whom in formal styles or in writing to refer to people when the person is the object of the verb. It is much more common in writing than in speaking. The most common use of whom is with a preposition.

A: Look at that girl.

B: The one [who|which|whom] is wearing a nice yellow sweater?

A: No, the girl [whose|who|which] bag is the same as mine!

B: Aaah! Is it that bag [which|where|that] you found the mouse Billy put last week? That was hilarious!

A: Don't tell me about the boy [who|which|whose] jokes I hate!

B: You are not fair to him! He is the only boy at school [who|whose|that] jokes I find funny.

A: It's because he has never mocked you!

B: I don't understand the reason [that|why|when] you are so angry.

A: The second [when|where|which] I opened the bag and saw that mouse was the most terrifying in my life! I thought I was going to die!

B: Don't be silly! I don't know anybody [which|whom|who] could die because of a mouse!

A: The day [when|where|that] I revenge him will come!

B: The silliest words [that|whom|where] I've ever heard. Let's go to school!
