Read the texts A–D, then answer the questions and complete the sentences.

A. The latest hurricane caused a great deal of damage to the village. Plenty of houses were destroyed. Several trees were rooted up. A few people were injured.

One thing was really surprising. The strong wind got a little kitten — about 1.5 months of age — and lifted it into the air. After the hurricane, the kitten turned out to sit in a high tree. Two rescuers came to the place of disaster to remove the poor animal from the tree.

The problem was — the kitten had been too scared to move. The rescuers had to climb the tree, hold the little cat, and carefully lift it out. The kitten's owner, a six-year-old boy, was extremely happy to see his pet alive.

B. Because of the volcanic eruption on a tropical island, about twenty people became broke. The island had always been in danger of storms, but the trouble came from another side. The volcano that had been dormant for a thousand years awakened and caused substantial damage to the island.

As a result, about twenty people lost their homes. Ten people have already moved to friends and relatives until they find new accommodation. But the other ten people had no one to give them home. They have been placed into a homeless shelter. The authorities are trying to solve the problem of their living at the moment.

C. Attention! Attention! In our city, a band of robbers appeared. They pretend to be beggars standing in the streets and asking to support them financially. When a person agrees to give them some money, the beggars say they have lost their way home and ask their helpers to lead them.

But when they turn to some empty space where nobody is in the street, they call the rest of the band. These people are exceedingly dangerous. They rob people and may stab or hit them if they disagree to give out everything they have. Several people have already been injured!

D. There was so much snow this winter that the town is now under the threat of flooding. The nearby villages might be cut off from the town and the regional centre, as well.

If you walk along the riverbank, you will notice that the river is overflowing. The snow is slowly melting, and everyone is afraid of the future ice drift. Municipal and regional authorities are taking preventive measures to reduce the effect of the presumed flooding.
