In the Middle of Nowhere

A. Ed Stafford: King of the Jungle

It took two years, four months and oneweek for Ed Stafford to walk the entirelength of the Amazon River. Unbearableheat and humidity tormented him as hehacked through the dense jungle with a single machete. Eddescribes his trip as agonising and he suffered greatly. A former British army captain, Ed is no stranger to hardship or challenge.

Despite everyone telling him that it was an impossible task, Ed was sure he could do it. However, once on the trip there weremoments when Ed came face to face with danger and thought hewas going to die. Fortunately, he managed to complete his 6,000kilometre journey and became the first man to walk the AmazonRiver.

B. Jessica Watson: Sea Queen

When Australian Jessica Watsonwas eleven years old she heard thestory of an 18 year old man whosailed alone around the world.Impressed by what the young manhad done, Jessica announced to herparents that she planned to doexactly the same thing at the age of sixteen. When newsgot around about her upcoming trip many peopledisapproved of a young girl taking on such a dangerousendeavour. However, with her parent's full support Jessicaset off alone for a non-stop journey at sea. Facingtorrential storms and various mechanical problems onboard, the teenager finally arrived after sailing around theworld in 210 days.

The hardest part Jessica says was nothaving anyone to talk to, but the stunning sunsets andstarry nights above her boat made it all worth it.

C. Eric Larsen: Iceman

Some people like cold weather.For Eric Larsen it's a passionthat he can't seem to getenough of. For many years nowEric Larsen had been exploringfreezing environments. Duringthis time, Larsen has been witness to the rapid disappearance of polarregions which inspired him to take on a new expedition called "Savethe Poles" to shed some light on the issue. Larsen traversed both theNorth and South Poles and climbed the summit of Mount Everest allin 365 days. Braving temperatures of — 50 \(\degree \) C, Larsen hiked, skied andswam across these extreme areas, all while filming a documentary.

"Insuch expeditions there are very few safe situations," Larsen explains,and he often found himself at risk and at the mercy of nature. Larsen plans with his film to show off these uniquely beautiful but often forgotten places to the rest of the world.

D. David de Rothschild:Plastic Voyager

David de Rothchild and his crewembarked on an incredible voyageacross the Pacific Ocean from SanFrancisco to Sydney. Aboard a boatmade out of 11,500 plastic bottles andpowered by solar and wind energy,Rothschild's aim was to highlight theenormous amount of plastic rubbish caught up in the ocean'scurrents.

The boat, Plastiki, demonstrates how disposable plasticcan be reused in a constructive way. Rothchild spent four yearspreparing for the expedition as Plastiki was being built. Upon theboat's completion, Rothschild still had his doubts about whether theboat could withstand the journey. In the end Plastiki travelled 9,500miles and arrived safely to a cheering crowd in Sydney Harbour.
