Sending criminals to prison is the only way to punish them.
- There is no denying the fact that the best punishment for people who have been accused of a crime is imprisonment. Some people agree with it, while others say there are many better ways to make criminals pay for breaking the law.
- In my viewpoint, keeping offenders imprisoned has more benefits for society as it makes our world safe and secure. First of all, the act of breaking the law can be considered as dangerous for people. If it is a violent crime, the perpetrator won't be able to commit further crimes if he is kept in jail. Secondly, in prisons law-breakers can apply for the rehabilitation programme and as a result, receive education and learn some valuable life skills. Besides, long prison sentences can deter offenders from reoffending crimes again because they begin to understand the value of freedom there.
- However, there is an opposing point of view on this issue. Some people say that there are minor crimes, for example, pickpocketing or shoplifting which do not involve violence against other people, so the criminal does not present a direct danger to anyone in the community. The best idea is to punish them with a huge fine or community service.
- I cannot agree with this point of view because the way the offender can attack a civilian while doing his community service or create some other dangerous situation. Besides, even a minor crime is a crime and should be treated by society appropriately. Convicts must be punished in order to teach them a lesson and their example must be set for others. Moreover, culprits should realise the criminal proceedings of their actions.
- In conclusion, I want to say that the matter of harsh punishment for criminals is still to be discussed. In my view, sending criminals to prisons can reduce the rate of severe crimes and help to reform them, so they don't commit crimes again.
