Body language plays an important role in the life of every person, as well as the language we speak. Scientists even say that most of the information we get about a person is non-verbal. The tone of voice, the way a person moves, looks and speaks, all of that helps to form an impression of him.
Small babies master body language together with speaking. There is some kind of cultural code for every nation which is also expressed in different styles of body language. You can check this theory quite easily if you find a foreign TV channel, turn down the volume and try to guess what's happening. It will not be as easy as if you did the same with the channel in your native language.
Sometimes different cultural codes can cause troubles and misunderstandings between people. For example, the distance between people during the conversation can play an important role. In European countries it is traditionally longer than in Asian countries. And if a person comes too close, it can cause some kind of tension. Another cultural code is just a simple smile. In some cultures people smile only if they experience some positive emotions but in other cultures smile is just a sign of politeness.
Body language is an important part of communication and if you study any foreign language, you should necessarily be aware of it too.
