Jules Verne was a popular French novelist, poet, and playwright. Nowadays, he is also considered to be one of the founders of science fiction. Verne's works showed the enterprising spirit of the nineteenth century. Verne captured the charm of that special time, when people were trying to fascinate each other by scientific progress and inventions. His novels were mostly written in the form of travelogues, taking readers to distant lands and other planets. He wrote both for teenagers and adults.
Jules Verne was born and raised in Nantes, France. His father was a successful lawyer. In 1847, Verne was sent to Paris, where he started to study law to continue the family tradition. There he was introduced into literary circles by his uncle. That was how Verne started to publish plays. At that time he was under the influence of some famous writers of those days. In January 1851, Verne got a degree in law despite devoting most of his time to writing.
Verne's novels quite soon became popular around the world. Verne spent lots of time researching for his novels due to the fact he did not have any travelling experience. Unlike fantasy literature, Verne tried to be realistic and stick to facts in detail. In his works Verne combined science and invention with adventures. Some things which he described in his works became a reality: his spaceship preceded the invention of the real rocket a century later.
In the first period of his career, Verne showed optimism about the Central role of Europe in the social and technical development of the world. However, pessimism about the future of human civilisation is visible in Verne's later novels.
For more than forty years, Verne published at least one book every year. Despite the fact that he wrote about exotic places, he travelled relatively little — his only flight in a balloon lasted twenty-four minutes.
Most of Verne's works were written by 1880. Verne's works include sixty-five novels, about twenty short stories and essays, thirty plays, several geographical works and opera librettos.
