We use Past Continuous to talk about past situations and activities that [continued|finished] for some time.

We use Past Continuous to talk about:

1 activities that were in progress around a particular point of time in the past.

Our classmates [were|was] sitting on this bench 10 minutes ago.

2 activities that were in progress when another action or event happened. We usually use Past Continuous for the activity in progress and Past Simple for the shorter action or event.

Nilson [washed|was washing] up when the cat broke the glass.

3 We often use when or while in the sentences which have Past Simple and Continuous. However, we do not use while with a shorter action in Past Simple.

The cat broke the glass [while|when] Nilson was washing up.

•To form Past Continuous, we use the past form of the verb to be + the [-ing|-ed] form of the main verb.

— [Was|Did] Maria wearing a leather jacket?

— Yes, she was.
