Ludwig van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven is a world-famous composer. He was born in Germany in 1770. Beethoven's native town was Bonn.
This great composer was a real genius. He was the key figure in classical music in his time. Now, his music is still remembered and played all over the world. Beethoven wrote his works in all the existing genres of his time.
Beethoven's father was a court singer, and his mother was a daughter of a court chef in Koblenz. His grandfather was also a singer—so little Ludwig would follow his family's steps. His father wanted Ludwig to become "the second Mozart". And that is why he began to teach him how to play the violin and harpsichord at an early age. Beethoven's first public performance took place when he was only 8. But the boy could not repeat the glory of Mozart. His father was disappointed and stopped teaching him. His father's friends taught Ludwig to play the organ and violin.
Beethoven had to stop studying at school after his grandfather's death. But he had already learnt Latin, Italian and French. Ludwig was fond of books. He was a very intelligent child.
Beethoven's mother died when he was 17, and he had to take care of his brothers. But later, he went to London and then to Vienna to continue his education. One of his teachers was Antonio Salieri, a well-known Italian musician.
Ludwig van Beethoven remains one of the most respected and loved composers of all time. Even little children know his music. His Moonlight Sonata and Für Elise are still popular among people of all ages. And if you are in a bad mood or feel upset, turn on one of Beethoven's melodies, and soon, you will feel calmer and happier.
