Proper nutrition makes the biggest contribution to our health. Unhealthy diets and lack of physical activity are the major health risks all over the world. Meanwhile, we can watch the growth of packaged, frozen, deep-fried food production and change of eating habits. Today, people eat more foods that are high in calories, fat, sugar, and salt. Many people don't eat enough fruit, vegetables, and other types of fibre, such as whole grains.
In order to show people an easy and clear way to choose which products they should eat more and less, a food pyramid was created. It is a scheme in the shape of a pyramid which consists of several layers or levels. The base is the products that should make up the main part of our everyday diet. These are whole grain bread, cereals and pasta. Initially, potatoes were also included here. However, later this product was moved to the top of the pyramid, together with the less healthy food that should be eaten less often. This happened because potatoes contain a lot of starch*, which quickly turns into glucose in the human body.
Carbohydrates** or sugars can be found both at the base of the pyramid and at the very top. The reason is that carbohydrates are very different: there are so-called simple and complex ones. Complex carbs are those that help you feel full for a long time. They can be found in whole-grain products. Simple carbs are those that are quickly absorbed and make you feel hungry again soon. Sweets, snacks and fizzy sugary drinks contain many carbs of this type. Excessive eating of these products can lead to obesity and other health problems.
The middle layer of the pyramid consists of fruit and vegetables. These products are rich in fibre which is very good for digestion. People should eat up to 5 portions of fruits and veggies a day. This is about 400 gramms. Next comes the protein***. It can be found in poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, cheese, milk and other dairy products. Protein dishes should be eaten 1-2 times a day. Red meat (beef, pork) is considered to be fatter and less healthy, so it is placed closer to the top of the pyramid together with fats like butter. Sweets, candies, and fizzy drinks are placed at the very top — one should eat as little of them as possible.
By making the right choice of your everyday meals you contribute to your health and well-being for the rest of your life.
